Studying Arts and Humanities at Sapienza

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is divided into six departments:

Philosophy;
Italian Institute of Oriental Studies - ISO;
Modern Letters and Cultures;
Sciences of the Ancient World;
History, Anthropology, Religions and Performing Arts;
European, American and Intercultural Studies.

There are sectors which take up the ancient and glorious tradition: from archaeological to historical-artistic studies, from classical to contemporary literature, from classical to humanist, romance and Italian philology. They are all traditionally the Faculty’s flagship, together with linguistics, that employs the most cutting-edge theories and techniques to approach texts and avails itself of any possible IT supports.

History plays of course an essential role, as it is strictly linked to anthropology and religious sciences, to philosophy, even contemporary, and also to geography, both considered as a study of environment and territory and as a potential for the tourist field. An important focus is also given on performing arts, with their expressive language of theatre, dance, cinema and fashion.

Foreign languages are the core of the Faculty’s course programme, whose offer is wider than that of most of the Italian universities: from major and minor European languages to Asia and Africa eastern languages, with a view to consider the teaching of foreign languages strictly linked to the knowledge of cultural heritage in all its past and present expressions.

Humanities deal with the multi-faceted aspects of humanity: history, beliefs, society, languages and culture. Studying such subjects means to answer questions about how we think, communicate and interact with our environment.

Such studies will help you become a free-thinker, able to think about building the future and finding a solution to present-day problems.

The future world of work needs people with critical, communication and problem–solving skills: teachers, journalists, writers, cultural mediators, but also people able to continue research and to enhance the extraordinary potential of Italy under the artistic, literary and cultural viewpoint. Did you know that half of worldwide leaders in the corporate, no-profit and public sectors got a degree in Social Sciences or Humanities? And that a Philosophy graduate has twice as many chances to become a Managing Director? This happens because classical studies enable people to adapt to the many ever-changing socio-economic and political frameworks of the modern world.

About us

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is the biggest one of Sapienza humanities area and ranks among the first 50 international faculties.

It’s a great European university centre that combines ancient traditions and new research and education prospects; thus, it provides its students with the necessary skills to be competitive in the labour market and to meet the demand for new types of professionals. However, this Faculty maintains the unity of classical knowledge, that requires, just like all exact sciences, state-of-the-art tools and methodologies.

This Faculty is thus designed to be the future merge of disciplinary areas different, though liable to changes and interconnections, according to the need for reflection and renewal posed by the cultural, methodological and technological innovations of the last decades.
