To get an idea of the prestige of Sapienza, perhaps it would be enough to say that among the alumni you can find both the current President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and the current Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

Sapienza has beyond 700 years of history and 115 thousand students, therefore it is the first university of Europe in terms of enrolled students, and it is also among the first ones in Italy for the quality of research and didactics, according the international rankings.

Study at our international college

Sapienza rhymes with excellence. The School for Advanced Studies (SSAS) is Sapienza college where outstanding students may benefit from free accommodation at housings made available by the University and attend additional interdisciplinary educational programmes concerning topics related to their study programme. The admitted students are also exempted from tuition fees and may apply for a scholarship.

The SSAS was founded in 2011 and belongs to the network of University Advanced Schools: some of them are independent, others are internal to universities, all constitute a qualifying factor of the Italian university system.

As part of the greatest Italian research university, the School for Advanced Studies places great emphasis on interdisciplinarity and in-depth study of the disciplines dealt with in its four academic areas.

Since 2014, it has carried on exchange programmes with the Scuola Normale di Pisa and the École Normale Supérieure of Paris.

Study programmes in English

Sapienza is increasingly international thanks to its manifold offer in English.

In 2020-2021 academic year, there will be 46 programmes entirely taught in English in various disciplines of both bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes, in addition to over 250 programmes in Italian, aimed at international students and anyone.

If you are Italian, the international courses will enable you to learn in a more challenging and heterogeneous environment without moving; if you are a foreigner, you may join the hundreds of young people coming from all over the world, who choose every year to study at Sapienza with a view to graduating in the largest university of Europe under the guidance of first-class teachers.

International admissions

Sapienza makes available simplified procedures for international students applying for bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes. Most of the programmes in English are available on our pre-selection platform, open from November to May for the September intake; the admission rules of all the other programmes are available on Sapienza website.

Studying at Sapienza means studying in one of the most important universities worldwide with the advantage of being in a public structure: this means that most of the fees are paid by the Italian government. The Special Master in Aerospace Engineering is a programme taught in English for students with a master’s degree in Engineering and aims to train experts who can find career opportunities in advanced research and development centres of aerospace engineering.

Play music, act and do radio

With us you can listen to music, play your favourite instrument and sing together with teachers and other students in MuSa – MusicaSapienza orchestras and choirs. We have classical, jazz and ethnic orchestras and also a choir.

The IUC - Concert University Institution programme turns the Aula Magna into a stage, where international young talents perform all the latest novelties of classical and jazz music.

The Theatron – Ancient theatre at Sapienza, with its project of translation and staging, allows to revive the unique experience of Greek and Latin classical theatre. Its performances are now known all over the world ….

The music, theatre and cinema initiatives of Sapienza are coordinated by the Centre CREA that manages the historic but recently renewed Teatro Ateneo.

You can listen to RadioSapienza speakers and podcasts: it’s the students’ web radio station, a news, in-depth information and entertainment channel, but also a place where to learn how to do radio. You may become part of its staff to gain experience in the field of editorial work, direction techniques and web communication strategies.

The skeleton of a sperm whale, 2 Neanderthals found in Rome, 1,200 plaster casts, 1 million plants at the Herbarium, 34,000 minerals, 1,000 fossils, a dispensary, the dish of the first pharaoh of the II Dynasty, the spectrograph used by Enrico Fermi, 750 boxes of lepidopterans…you may find all this wealth in the 18 Sapienza museums.

The Sapienza Museum Network also includes the extraordinary Botanical Garden and a contemporary art laboratory.

Services for students with disabilities and special needs

Students with special needs are special to us and are ensured all our support.

Specialist tutoring services are supplied by fully-trained professionals with an expertise in humanities, psychology and experience in inclusive didactics and civil service. Such services aim to promote the education of students with disabilities or with specific learning difficulties thanks to:

• a tailored support, with methodological and educational-psychology directions, guaranteed for the entire study programme;
• the identification of the supports and services most suitable to the students’ disability;
• assistance in the use of software and multimedia materials.

To ensure and encourage the educational results of students with a hearing impairment there is the ISL interpretation service. Students may request it for educational activities (attendance to lectures, participation in training courses organised by the degree programme, exam tests, teachers’ office hours) and for Student Office activities.

There are also peer tutoring, benefits for the purchase of special equipment and taxi vouchers among the other available services.

Services for specific learning difficulties - SpLDs

Sapienza offers counselling services for the educational support of students with specific learning difficulties and/or with a previous history of neurodevelopmental disorders and/or type of disability or any other special educational needs. Such counselling provides welcome, orientation, monitoring and support services.

According to the certification submitted by students, psychotherapists of the counselling service:

• draw up and agree with students a tailored plan for their university career;
• prepare the specific learning difficulties form;
• monitor and update the progress of the students’ career to optimise actions and tools;
• develop suitable paths to foster the university potential.

 Each Faculty has a teacher in charge of the active participation of students with specific learning difficulties, who has the duty to:

• direct students to the specialist tutoring services;
• collaborate on the solution of logistics and organisational problems;
• collaborate in disseminating information in their own Faculty.

To participate in an Erasmus programme will enable you to spend a study or traineeship period abroad, to experience a personal and educational growth and to improve your language skills by boosting your contacts and job prospects. There are over 600 universities all over Europe to choose among.

It’s not a waste of time for you: all the activities and exams will be recognised in your university career; you will also receive a financial aid and will be able to attend language courses at our Language Centre.

Sapienza Library System

To prepare for exams, research a topic or find a seat to study, you have 50 libraries at your disposal in 120 locations with 2.7 million books available on site or for loan. And if you want to study from home, thanks to Sapienza credentials you can access 500,000 e-books, more than 44,000 electronic journals and 170 databases. But Sapienza libraries also offer you assistance with about 200 librarians, cultural activities such as reading clubs and bookcrossing points, courses to prepare bibliographies or expand your research independently. And if you want, you can also work in the library through a collaboration grant.

Sports facilities

Sapienza offers 100,000 square metres and exclusive services to practise a lot of sports, from football to swimming, from yoga and fitness to martial arts, from archery to tennis, and from athletics to team sports. Tor di Quinto and Campi di Via Osoppo sports facilities, managed by SapienzaSport Centre are home to a 33 metre swimming pool, a running track and five-a-side football pitches with a greenset ground.

Healthcare and well-being services

Mens sana in corpore sano is not just a way of saying at Sapienza: we’re committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all our students throughout their time with us. You may take care of your health and well-being thanks to free-of-charge services as well as highly qualified medical staff and specialists. We provide nutrition and stop smoking services, a guidance to choosing your general practitioner and much more. A special section is devoted to supportive resources related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Psychological counseling

Transition to university is a delicate stage of life. When experiencing a thoroughly new environment, with a completely different study method and a new approach to teachers and colleagues, it is common to go through some emotional distress.

You can receive psychological counselling or participate in the NoiBene programme which may help you build essential skills to respond to the demands of life at university.

Opportunities and benefits

Sapienza supports families and talented students with exemptions and concessions on university enrollment fees. We are aware that the consequences of the Covid-19 emergency have significantly altered the economic capacity of many families. The exemption thresholds are based on the family's economic situation indicator (ISEE), as detailed on the dedicated pages.

The full exemption also applies to those with a disability, to those who receive 100 or 100 cum laude at the baccalaureate (high school diploma), to winners of regional scholarships, to those who enroll in our Higher School of Advanced Studies. There are also concessions for families with multiple members enrolled in the university and for those with significant academic or sporting achievements.

DiscoLazio: scholarships, lodgings and...

The Regione Lazio continues its commitment to the right to education in our region through DiSCo, by awarding scholarships, lodgings, grants for international mobility and the degree benefit.

You may find a call available whose deadline is July 24, 2020 at h. 12:00 a.m. on DiscoLazio website.

There will be further calls during the year for the awarding of book tokens, subsidies for rentals, transport facilities and other benefits.

Sustainable environment, energy, mobility

Sapienza has developed an Energy-environmental strategic plan (PES) with a view to identifying any short and medium-term interventions aimed at boosting energy efficiency and renewable sources, but also at curbing pollution and reducing costs.

We moreover join RUS – Network of Universities for sustainable development, a group of Italian universities that have undertaken to achieve integrated sustainability and to actively pursue the Network’s institutional goals, in full agreement with the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
